This Easter, Alice Cooper, the Godfather of Shock Rock, will light up TV screens across America when he stars as King Herod in a new TV production of Jesus Christ Superstar Live!

Cooper is the first performer to be cast for the live TV broadcast, which is the latest in the Live! series of TV adaptations of classic musicals, which include The Sound of Music Live!, Peter Pan Live!, The Wiz Live! and Hairspray Live! Cooper’s casting comes almost two decades after he was invited by the musical’s creators Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to sing in the role of Herod on a cast album of the musical’s 1996 production.

A statement from the TV studio said, “Alice Cooper, whose theatricality is the stuff of legend, is the perfect rock star to play Herod in our live production. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice wrote a showstopping musical number for Herod, and we all look forward to the ‘King of Shock Rock’ taking on the King of Judea.”
