A film trailer for a documentary exploring David Bowie’s final years has been released by HBO. “David Bowie: The Last Five Years” will air on the cable network on January 8, 2018 – the day on which Bowie would have celebrated his 71st birthday. The singer died from cancer in 2016.
“Largely focused on Bowie’s final two albums, The Next Day and Blackstar, the film also explores his musical, Lazarus, which he began developing in the midst of his illness,” said HBO, in a prepared statement.
Earlier this year, director Francis Whateley told Rolling Stone the film would combine material from recent years with archival footage.
“I wanted to look at his final period through the prism of the past,” he explained. “Near the end of his life, he wrote to see how I was doing. He said to me, ‘I’m very happy with my lot in life and the new album. What more can any man ask for?’ It really showed the dignity of the man.”
